Quick Tip 04: How to make Ink Splatter with Mospline and Metaballs from yader on Vimeo.

This video shows one way of achieving an ink splatter effect with mosplines. There are probably many others. In the tutorial I only show the core technique with very rough settings. So experimenting and refining is highly recommended :-)
Note: You can take as many splines as you like under one metaball object, you are not restricted to one set of mosplines. So go wild!
